Strong spokes for the heavier rider, especially useful on 29er builds where addition stiffness is required.

Sapim Race spokes are made from 1.8-2mm butted stainless steel. The middle section is 1.8mm, while the end sections (threaded and head ends) are 2.0mm for strength.
The Sapim Race is one of the strongest spokes we use. It’s suitable for any type of riding; road, mountain bike XC or downhill, and cyclocross. The fairly thick 1.8mm middle section means the spoke doesn’t stretch much under riding forces. The Sapim Race is equivalent in dimensions and strength to the DT Swiss Competition.
Mountain bike: Use for any wheels where strength is important, especially downhill/enduro. Thick spokes are also less likely to break from rock damage due to the extra material. To save some weight, look instead at the Sapim D-Light, a 2.0-1.65mm, lighter spoke.
Road: Use these strong Sapim Race spokes for training or touring wheels. For light weight road wheels we often use the Sapim Race on the rear drive side, and Sapim Laser for the front / rear non-drive sides. The reason for this is the steep bracing angle on the rear drive side; particularly with many new 11-speed compatible hubs, the freehub body is now so long that more flexible (thinner) spokes can’t provide sufficient lateral stiffness. A less flexible (thicker) spoke such as the Race adds a small amount of weight but builds a much stiffer wheel.
Cyclocross: Suitable for cyclocross wheels for heavier riders, or general all-round riding where light weight is less important. See also the D-Light or (especially for rim-brake CX bikes) the Sapim Laser.
